The Power of Why: How to Get Back on Track With Your New Years Resolutions (and Stay There)

Writer: Tracy The Health CoachTracy The Health Coach

Before you throw in the towel on your new years resolutions, let me share a secret: it's not about the resolution, it's about the why.

Five years ago, I began a daunting challenge: Long Covid. My doctor told me my body might stay as it was if I didn't do something. I felt I was not able to do much because standing even for 5 minutes was not possible. Any simple task (on one occasion, loading 3 cups in the dishwasher) would get me out of breath like I had ran a marathon. What the doctor was saying was that limited movement, breathlessness with simple tasks would be my constant reality. That wasn't an option at all!

Walking became my medicine. It was my why – to reclaim my strength, to breathe freely again, enjoy the things I used to and be independent once again. And guess what? It worked! I'm stronger now than I was 5 years ago. My uphill recovery continues, fuelled by that initial why.

Even on a chilly 2°C day (yes, I bundle up – I detest the cold!), I'm out there walking. Because the desire to be strong, to keep improving, outweighs the discomfort. (See my bundled-up blog pic for proof!)

The magic isn't just in the walking; it's in the why. I discovered a love for it along the way, which makes it enjoyable and sustainable, wherever I go. Even on holiday I find ways to walk. If your resolutions haven't stuck, take a moment. Sit down and really think about why you set them in the first place. What deep desire are they connected to?

That why is your superpower. It's what will get you through the tough days, push you past the excuses and low/no motivation, and help you create consistent, enjoyable changes that will transform your health in ways you never imagined! Don't give up on your goals – rediscover your why and watch your dreams become reality.

PS: Every Long Covid patient will be different because we all have different needs. What worked for me may not work for you. Talk to your Consultant, GP, or Health Coach to find what will work for you.
